(opens new window) Hardboard Backing Hardboard Backing (HB) is 3/16″ thick and makes a 0.28″ thick accent woven metal tile that has a thickness similar to porcelain or ceramic tiles.  Our most popular backing choice, HB is ideal for LOW-moisture areas and is chosen for kitchen backsplashes (even behind sinks and gas ranges in residential kitchens), high-heat areas such as fireplace surrounds, and many residential and commercial wall applications. Tile has stainless steel on front and all 4 sides. Grout is optional and not required. If grout is chosen, please choose a non-sanded grout (grout without sand). The HB we use is called Eucaboard, which is made with eucalyptus wood fibers tempered by coating with a thin layer of linseed oil and baking at a high temperature to polymerize the oil. This provides more water and impact  resistance, hardness, rigidity and tensile strength. Unlike particle board, it will not split or crack. It is used in construction and furniture. Fiberock Backing Fiberock (FR) backing is 0.25″ thick and makes a 0.35″ thick accent woven metal tile. FR recommended for HIGH-Moisture areas that have water running over the walls/tiles. Very popular backing choice for commercial kitchens/bathrooms, showers, outdoor kitchens and firepits. Also popular when mixing with other thicker, natural tile/stone products (FR-backed tiles have similar thickness and sets with same mastic). Tile has stainless steel on front and all 4 sides. Please note: FR is a thicker backer than hardboard and does protrude from the back side of the metal tile approximately 1/16″. Therefore, the White Fiberock WILL BE SEEN at the bottom 1/16″ of the tile’s side profile. This usually isn’t a problem, as when tiles are installed in areas with moisture high enough for the need of FR, then grout (non-sanded grout) will be required to fully seal out the moisture, and therefore trim pieces will be needed. We offer trim pieces, and Schluter is always a good option for trim pieces as well.FR is made from 95% recycled material and is manufactured from an environmentally sustainable, specially engineered combination of  synthetic gypsum and cellulose fibers. It has an integral water resistant composition that offers durability, superior performance, and exceptional tile bond. FR is engineered to meet water-, mold- and indentation-resistance under or behind the tile.
